Raiders’ Josh Jacobs, who as a youngster slept with his dad in a car, buys his father a house

Typically the NFL draft is a drudge-fest, overhyped and
microanalyzed.

Last spring drudgery took a holiday, if only for a couple of
minutes after the Raiders selected running back Josh Jacobs.

“You come from humble beginnings,” Deion Sanders told
Jacobs. “Not the way you would have wanted to grow up. But look
at you now. Can you tell me what your father means to you?”

“He means everything to me, man,” Jacobs said. “I owe him
everything.”

Fast forward to Monday when Jacobs’ father Marty was informed
he now owed nothing. His son had purchased a house for his father
in Oklahoma.

The gift was emotional, practical and symbolic. You may have
heard that as a youngster, there was a time when Josh and his
father didn’t have a house. They slept in Marty’s car.

An unforgettable gesture.@iAM_JoshJacobs
thanked his father for his sacrifices growing by buying him a home
in Oklahoma.

“Why you try not to cry, dude?” teased Josh, who earned
$495,000 as a rookie, according to pro-football-reference.com.

Josh rushed for 1,150 yards this season (pulverizing the Raiders
rookie record), but he doesn’t run from his humble roots. At the
draft he wore a suit jacket with a lining depicting a flower
growing up through crumbled cement.

“I’m a concrete rose,” he told Sanders. “I come from
nothing, and now I’m here.”

Shorty thereafter, ESPN shared Jacobs’ story on
SportsCenter.

“Sleeping in the car, I always look back on it,” Jacobs told
ESPN. “It’s always going to be something that molded me into
who I am. It might have been rough, but, I mean, it’s my
life.”
